Hi, my name is Eric Atkins. I am currently living and working in Huntsville, Alabama with my wife Erin and cat Emma. Originally from tiny Riceville, Tennessee, I moved to Huntsville in 1997 to peruse a college education at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. There, I received a major degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering and a minor degree in Mathematics.
Today I am employed by a major U.S. organization specialized in visualization, systems engineering, and project management. As a hobby, I am a free lance web developer building websites for local organizations and groups. I am also a freelance writer and technology enthusiast. My articles on technology and the video game industry have appeared on major media outlets like Newsweek, MSNBC, G4TV, DIGG.com, and IGN.
I have played and won at the highest level of video game competitions. I have traveled across the US to play in tournaments hosted by Major League Gaming and the Cyberathlete Amateur League. I am a Core Group tester for Microsoft Game Studios where I beta test some up and coming video games.
This website has been private for most of its existence. This site was and still is a testbed for many web ventures and ideas. However, spawned by the realization that I might have something neat to say and that my buddies are getting into blogging, I might as well put up a front too.
This is my webspace. It is powered by PHP 5, Apache 2, XML, an open source software such as Drupal.
By the way, I attend Sojourn Church of Huntsville and volunteer with others in the community to bring you Sojourn's web 2.0 presence.

Perhaps that is all.
I do believe the media affects consumption and that it leads to more people than normal going to the pumps. Yesterday was a normal Saturday for most of the US, yet gas stations across the country were running out of gas.

Gas prices were spiking late on Thursday night. I think this is more the refineries and wholesalers speculating that Houston would get overrun.
I don't think the SR has gasoline stocks. That's my understanding, but I could be wrong.

People think they can get Recon Armour for just asking for it. You guys are lucky this isn't bungie.net, or else you'd be put on the "People who will NEVER get Recon Armour" list, or even possibly banned from bungie.net, just for asking for it. You can just ask like "May I have Recon good sir?" and poof, nomore bungie.net for you.

I'm with you on the spam hating. I've got this neurosis, which prevents me from feeling relaxed when seeing that my email has unread messages in it.

That's a really good idea. I just implemented it. Typically, I would empty out my spam folder a few times a day. You just saved me about twenty clicks per day. Thanks!

I've been using gmail for a long time and think the spam protection feature is near perfect! What I have a problem with is unwanted emails... I just need a half a day to go and "unsubscribe" from lot's of newsletters and sites. Great blog by the way :)

MCHS Your Observations
I can echo your observations on MCHS, I have a daughter going there, the kids still have the goals of going to work in the local factories. No real goals or push to be something better. I think much of that comes from home too, as well as being in the Bible belt, get out of school get a job start a family is the emphasis. My daughter jokes about the three P's, and that everything is good... She is passing, not on probation and not pregnant. In fact she is doing much more than that, the bulk of her class load is with honors classes, including a honors pre-calculus class.
I was born in Athens, but lived most of my life in California and have recently moved back to the area, what shock, well at least my kids have goals other than finding a man an just getting married... I know growing up in California, it was always finish high school and go to college as the next basic step, here it is hope to get through high school and then find a good factory job. It is really a shame.
